Investment Dictionary - Credit quality

A measure of the likelihood that a company will be able to make interest and principal payments on its bonds or other debt securities. Standard & Poor's Corporation and Moody's Investors Service rate the credit quality of publicly traded debt securities. Bonds with the highest credit quality ratings are known as investment grade, and bonds with poor credit quality are known as speculative or "junk" bonds.
